Nous aurons passé en tout trois magnifiques jours à visiter Riga. Question logement, nous sommes hébergés chez Matiss et Barbara, deux Couchsurfers originaires de Lettonie. Voici ce que nous avons fait ces jours-ci à Riga :

Lundi 23 mars : Et c’est parti pour une visite de Riga. Matiss nous emmène tout d’abord dans un marché aux puces russes, marché très populaires à l’ère soviétique où tout pouvait être trouvé à un prix relativement raisonnable. Il nous a ensuite emmené au ‘Central Market’, marché le plus populaire de Riga qui se trouve dans d’anciens hangars à zeppelin. A midi ce lundi-là, nous avons rejoint le ‘Riga free city tour’ : c’est un tour guidé et gratuit de Riga, réalisé par un habitant volontaire de Riga qui connaît très bien la ville et son histoire. Visite très intéressante qui nous donne une vision différente de la ville (un grand merci à notre super guide !). Pendant ce tour, Ragna et moi on a sympathisé avec un chilien du nom de Gonzalo. Un gars très sympa qui m’a directement invité chez lui après lui avoir expliqué mon prochain voyage en Amérique du sud. L’hospitalité sud-américaine est au rendez-vous. On a passé un peu de temps tous ensemble avant de se séparer. On a fait du shopping de touriste et on a été invité à goûter l’alcool local dans un magasin de souvenirs : le Balzham (goût très spécial mais pas si mauvais que ça…). Après avoir déambulé dans les rues de Riga (notamment pour trouver le symbole de Riga : deux chats perchés sur une maison de Riga), on a fini la journée en allant manger dans un restaurant qui sert des repas typiquement letton : Ala.


Mardi 24 mars : Ce matin on commence par faire le tour du quartier ‘Art nouveau’, qui offre une vision bien différente de Riga. Magnifique quartier ! Nous avons ensuite traversé la rivière Daugava pour aller visiter le mémorial Zanis Lipke : c’est un habitant de Riga qui a sauvé une soixantaine de juifs pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale en les cachant sous sa maison. Ensuite, nous sommes allés nous promener encore une fois dans les rues de Riga, se posant dans un café… Bref, on profite de cette jolie petite ville. Le soir, nous avons rejoint une rencontre hebdomadaire de Couchsurfing qui avait lieu dans un café du centre-ville et dont plusieurs Couchsurfer prennent part. Nous y avons pris part. Nous avons retrouvés de nombreuses personnes toutes aussi sympa les unes des autres. Le chilien Gonzalo était aussi de la partie. Nous ne sommes pas rentrés trop tard pour ne pas déranger notre Couchsurfer.

Mercredi 25 mars : Dernier jour dans cette ville, dernier jour dans les pays baltiques… On prend le temps de se réveiller, on se rend ensuite pour une visite guidée à une maison du quartier où nous logeons qui a notamment servi au KGB pendant l’époque soviétique. Visite très intéressante qui nous a permis de nous rendre compte de la répression sévère du régime soviétique de l’époque. Après cela, nous sommes allés dans le centre-ville pour une dernière fois avant de revenir chez nos Couchsurfers. Après avoir fait mes sacs, nous nous sommes dirigés vers l’aéroport de Riga. Moi je pars direction Bruxelles et Ragna reste à Riga (elle partira demain pour retourner vivre à Tallinn). Un dernier au revoir rempli d’émotions avant de m’envoler...

We have spent totally 3 awesome days visiting Riga. Concerning the accomodation, we are hosted in Matiss and Barbara's place. Thay are two Couchsurfers originally from Latvia. Here is what we've done the last few days here in Riga :

Monday 23rd of mach : Let's go to visit Riga ! First of all, Matiss took us to a russian Flee market, a really popular market during the soviet period. You could have found almost anything for a relatively cheap price. Then we went to the 'Central Market', the most popular market of Riga which is situated in old zeppelin barns. At midday, we have joined the 'Riga free city tour' : it is a free guided tour of Riga made by a volunteer citizen of Riga which has a good knowledge of the city and about its history. It was a really interesting visit which gave us a different view of the city (a great thank you to our guide !). During that tour, Ragna and I we have met a chilian guy named Gonzalo. A really nice guy which invited me in his home after having explained him my next trip to South America. What a great south-american hospitality ! We had lunch all together before going different ways. So we went to do some shopping (because we are tourist indeed) and we have tried the local alcohol in a souvenirs shop : the Balsham (a really strange taste which was quite good actually...). After all of that we just walked in Riga streets (especially to find the symbol of Riga : two cats sitting on a Riga house) and then we finished our long day by going to eat in a restaurant which serve typical latvian meals : Ala.

Tuesday 24th of march : This morning we started by a walk tour in the 'Art Nouveau' district (also known as the Quiet Centre), which offers a different view of Riga. Very nice district ! Then we have crossed the Daugava river to go visiting the Zanis Lipke memorial : it's about a family who saved the lives of many Latvian Jews during the World War II by hiding them under their house. Very interesting as well. Then we went walking in Riga streets, once more, stopping in some coffee places to rest a bit... Well, we enjoyed our time in that cute city. In the evening, we have joined a Couchsurfing weekly meeting which took place in a coffee-bar in the Old town and there was few Couchsurfers that we have met there. So we went there and there was some very nice people and we have talked a lot to them, sharing experiences and so on. Gonzalo, the chilian guy, was also there. We didn't came back too late, in order not to disturb our Couchsurfers.

Wednesday 25th of march : Last day in Riga city, last day in the Baltic countries... We took our time to wake up and then we went to a guided tour in a special house, not so far from where we are hosted. It was a house used by the KGB during the soviet period. It was a very interesting visit and we realized how tough was the soviet repression during the soviet period. After that, we went one more time in the city center before coming back to our Couchsurfers place. Then I had to pack everything and then we headed for the Riga airport. I am taking a plane to go to Brussels and Ragna is going to stay in Riga (she is going back tomorrow toTallinn). An emotional good bye before going through the gates...
